Abattoirs are amongst the harshest of working environments and require heavy duty flooring that is impact and abrasion resistant, anti-slip and suitable for cleaning at high temperatures with a range of chemical cleaners.
Specific requirements are:
Abattoir floors must be anti-slip in dry and wet conditions
Abattoir floors must safe underfoot and suitable for foot and wheeled traffic
Abattoir floors must be capable of withstanding pressure washing at low and high temperatues
Abattoir floors must capable of being thoroughly de-greased and cleaned
Abattoir floors must be resistant to a wide range of chemicals
Abattoir floors must be abrasion and impact resistant
Floors may be constantly wet or immersed in water and slurries of animal waste, blood, fat, and other by-products.
Cleaning and sanitising operations can subject the floor to significant thermal cycling.
Owing to their effectiveness on grease, oil, and other organic matter, strong chemical cleaners may well be used.
Pressurised steam cleaning can subject the floor to thermal shock and cause surface spalling in unprotected concrete.
Owing to their acidic nature, animal fat and proteins will attack unprotected concrete by reacting with the alkaline cement paste that binds the concrete together thus weakening it and making it more susceptible to damage from impact, abrasion, thermal cycling, and further chemical attack.
Abattoir floors can present slip hazards as they are often wet which, combined with animal fats or oils, is very slippery.
Operatives must have secure footing, particularly when working around hazardous equipment and heavy moving equipment or carcasses.
Abattoir floors are subjected to heavy forklift and pallet trucks.
Heavy duty polyurethane resin floor systems such as Pumadur HF are highly recommended in abbattoirs.
Pumadur HF has been tested and verfied as suitable for installation within food manufacturing environments by the Campden & Chorleywood Food Research Association.
Pumadur HF cures quickly in the cool and damp conditions typical of abbatoirs, provides excellent chemical resistance and can withstand organic acids and common cleaning chemicals.
Pumadur HF polyurethane resin floors are extremely hard wearing with excellent impact and abrasion resistant properties and are impervious and non-porous throughout their thickness.
For many years Pumadur HF polyurethane resin floor screeds have demonstrated excellent performance in wet food processing environments and in areas subject to severe thermal cycling, particularly within the harsh conditions often present in abattoirs.
Pumadur HF can be subjected to high temperatures and steam cleaning so offers first class performance in this aggressive environment.
Internal coved (rounded) skirtings are another feature to consider. When we install your new abattoir floor we can continue the flooring right up the walls, typically about four inches for a standard coving detail, up and over kerbs if required or to terminate against fixed stainless steel coving.
Pumadur HF is complemented with Pumadur CG for coved (rounded) skirtings and Pumadur TF sealer for application onto these skirtings.
