Rapid Cure HVG Workshop Floor Painting (Two day turnaround)

Many HGV Workshops operate seven days a week and some twenty-four hours per day which means that the opportunities to maintain and upgrade the floor finishes are limited by time constraints.

Traditional epoxy resin floor coatings work on a cycle of:

Day 1 – Preparation & first coat
Day 2 – Second coat
Day 3 – Line markings & yellow base for hatching
Day 4 – Black to complete hatching
Day 5 – Curing

This puts the floor area out of commission for a minimum of 3-4 days plus curing time of at least one full day in the summer and two to three days in the winter months.

We were recently asked if it was possible to prepare and paint a heavy duty goods vehicle workshop commencing at 8am on a Saturday morning and guaranteeing that it would be available for use at 8am on the Monday morning.

The overall floor area was in excess of 450m2 with the scope of works consisting of the following:

  • Remove existing floor paint by diamond grinding and apply two coats of high build anti-slip resin floor paint – Red
  • Diamond grind to remove existing paint on stair treads and risers leading down to pits and re-paint with two coats of high build resin floor paint – Black with coarse anti-slip finish and Safety Yellow nosings
  • Remove existing floor paint in workshop by dust free shot-blasting
  • Paint walkway leading from office area to welfare facilities with two coats of light anti-slip high build resin floor paint – Green with Safety Yellow edge lines
  • Paint main floor area with two coats of light anti-slip high build resin floor paint – Grey
  • Paint hatching around three pits with two coats of light anti-slip high build resin floor paint – Safety Yellow and Black

Using standard epoxy resin floor paints this would have required at least four working days with a further two days for curing.

By using a rapid curing resin floor paint we commenced works on Saturday at 8am and completed at 7pm Sunday with the floor being available for use at 9pm Sunday, thirty seven hours after being given possession.

The workforce and management were highly impressed by the speed of application, curing and quality of workmanship and anticipate this being rolled out across the group as and when required.

About Industrial Floor Treatments (Stone) Ltd

Industrial Floor Treatments (Stone) Ltd are a dedicated factory floor painting contractor.

We specialise in the installation of epoxy resin factory floor paint and epoxy resin and polyurethane resin screeds on new build and refurbishment projects throughout England.

We do not undertake domestic works, concentrating solely on industrial premises where floor painting is required.

We prepare and paint concrete floors in manufacturing & engineering plants.

We also install floors in the printing, paper & packaging industries, food production facilities, warehouses, garages and workshops.

For our commercial clients such as hotels and restaurants this generally involves the application of a food grade floor finish. These are installed in the back of house areas such as kitchens, food preparation areas, pot-wash and other areas of high footfall.

So why paint your hgv workshop floor?

Safety. By ensuring that pedestrian routes, brake testers, lifts and pits are all clearly delineated to ensure the safety of personnel and visitors.

Box outlines with single directional hatching should be marked out at all fire exit doors to ensure that they are not blocked with plant, materials or equipment.

Where safety underfoot is compromised because of liquid spillages an anti-slip finish should be considered. This is generally deemed a requirement where a slip potential will arise on a regular basis and can be anticipated.

Where an unforeseen accidental spillage occurs such as a rare or occasional machine leak an anti-slip finish is generally not required subject to prompt cleaning up.

Operational Benefits – a colour coded floor helps to co-ordinate all activities. An organised workflow where plant and equipment can be placed and stored correctly is essential.

Light reflection – a painted hgv workshop floor with a gloss finish will reflect more light than bare concrete. This provides greater visibility in your workshop promoting safety and reducing the need for auxiliary lighting. We can repair the most eroded of floors, repair cracks and spalled joints as well as damage from years mechanical or chemical abuse.

Aesthetics – one of the primary reasons to paint your hgv workshop floor is the vibrancy and colour that it produces.

Employee morale – clean, glossy resin flooring impacts on employee morale, customer confidence, and creates a more enjoyable workshop environment than one that has dull, dirty or bare concrete floors.

Ease of cleaning – resin floors tend to be easier to clean. Bare concrete floors attract and hold dirt whereas a resin floor paint will provide a barrier that makes clean-up faster and easier. Painting your workshop floor also helps keep them dry and safe and reduces the cost of sweeping and scrubbing.

Protection from wear – concrete floors protected with resin floor paints will last longer than unpainted concrete. Vehicle traffic, particularly when combined with other factors, can wear away the cement matrix of concrete slabs and expose the aggregate. A resin floor paint will protect the concrete.
